PUNTA GORDA HUMANE SOCIETY

2013 NEWS FROM PUNTA GORDA HUMANE SOCIETY….

Punta Gorda Humane Society bylaws were (finally) registered in May and on July 13th the organization had its first annual general meeting. A Board was elected for the 2 year period September 2013 – 15. A list of board members can be seen on the ‘mission statement’ page.

Shortly thereafter, a request to have a team of vets come to PG in 2014 was sent to World Vets (International Aid for Animals - www.worldvets.org). The purpose of such a visit would be to make qualified medical services available to pets in the District who would otherwise not get it.

In August we received word that Punta Gorda had been selected as a tentative location for the spring of 2014! With this encouraging news the planning of the event began. World Vet will send a team of 15, including several veterinarians and hold clinics for three days next year (April 28 – 30th).

The clinics and medications will be free of charge, however, Punta Gorda Humane Society has to provide various inputs including a suitable building, local transportation (if required), volunteers to help during clinics, a few supplies (tables, chairs, paper towels, garbage bags, hydrogen peroxide etc.) , lunch and drinks during clinics, assist World Vets with obtaining temporary permits and support from local authorities and last, but not least, PGHS is responsible for promoting the clinics. Punta Gorda Humane Society’s in-house vet, Dr. Floyd Bennett, will be working with World Vet team and PGHS. His responsibility will be to sign the temporary veterinarian registration applications and to be in charge of medication and any follow up treatment required after the team has left. World Vet encourages and welcomes other local vets to participate.

More details will be released once World Vet’s International Programs Manager has visited Punta Gorda (scheduled for December).

On October 6 and 7th the sixth clinic of 2013 was held.

About us:

The Punta Gorda Humane Society is a community-based volunteer organization. Its mission is to improve the lives of animals, especially pets, through education and affordable medical care administered by qualified health care professionals.  The PGHS aims to help people provide a healthy environment for their pets and to rescue animals in need.  Over the past 10 months we have scheduled 6 vet clinics, attended by Dr. Floyd Bennett of Belize City and hosted by Jill Cotter at her home on Front Street in Punta Gorda Town.  These clinics have been the focus of the PGHS' work.  The society is committed to providing high quality and affordable veterinary care for both pets and animals in need.
